is a coalition
representing local players of disc sports (over 200 Barnstable
residents). The recreation department has co-sponsored a
number of events to generate interest and competitive disc play.
An eighteen hole disc (frisbee) golf course has been in continuous use
at Burgess Park since 1990, and has been noted in nearly all of the
local newspapers - including the front page of the Cape Cod Times
(10/92).
Local disc golf players and the Barnstable Recreation Department have
worked thousands of person-hours on the design, development, and
maintenance of the course. On many occasions, volunteers have performed
park-wide litter pick-ups. The preservation of the centerpiece of the
park, the Frederick Law Olmstead gardens, is integral to the course
design.
Burgess Park has been a participating site in "World's Biggest Disc Golf" events since 1992. With record turnouts the park has won world
wide competitions based on player participation.
As prizes in these competitions, the Town of Barnstable has received a
total of ten "poleholes." The Recreation Department's construction of
the course and later improvements added by CCFGA have included over
$9,000 worth of equipment.
The course is being used every month of the year (even in the snow).
The CCFGA has organized "for fun" leagues - several each year - each
having over forty participants.
The use of the park as a disc golf course can be thought of as eighteen
"mini-walking trails." The "fairways" include many trees since the
trees create challenge for the sport. In addition, the park requires
almost none of the the traditional maintenance of a "ball" golf course.
This cooperative effort has resulted in a fun, healthy, alternative
activity available year-round to area residents - with no greens fees!

Terminal Moraine ... has been terminated
Despite a $100 grant from NEFA, and $230 supplied by CCFGA, a basket purchased by Cape Cod Disc Golf "Angel" Andrea Adams, and the support of local businesses and many hours of donated labor, the course at the Cape Cod Community College has been eliminated as of Summer 2008. We'll miss you!
